Day 4 of the Northern Games was filled with excitement and tears!

Christopher Penney has broken the record for the One-Leg Seal Kick during the Northern Games! The Charlottetown man, 21, kicked 9’3” on Thursday night.

The impressive performance earned Christopher GOLD in Northern Games!

Christopher spoke to The Northern Star’s Brookelynn Keefe after the performance.

Brookelynn Keefe: How are you feeling right now?

Christopher Penney: Not too bad. Yeah, not too bad.

Brookelynn Keefe: How did you train for this event?

Christopher Penney: Pretty much just a lot of work at the gym, and then we got the gym two nights a week, so I would practice pretty much every night.

Brookelynn Keefe: What is it like getting to keep the seal?

Christopher Penney: It's the second seal. And pretty good. It's pretty good, but I would dream at night getting up and kicking it or taking the seal.

Brookelynn Keefe: Are we expecting to see you in three years again?

Christopher Penney: I’m going to have to come back. Three-peat. laughs

Violence Prevention Labrador’s Respect Buffs!

Respect Campaign 2026 – Care is Prevention

As communities gather for the 2026 Labrador Winter Games, Violence Prevention Labrador (VPL) is once again holding the Respect Campaign.

This year, the framing is simple:

Respect — Because how we treat each other matters, especially when we gather.

The Games are about more than sport. They are about community, belonging, friendship, pride, and culture. When we gather, we have powerful opportunities to impact one another.

In Labrador, care has always been part of who we are — how we survive, support, and look out for one another. Through the Labrador Cares Coalition, we recognize care as prevention — not only through programs, but through everyday moments.

The Respect buff is a symbol — not a badge of perfection. It represents a shared commitment to care, connection, and responsibility.

Care is not limited to services.

Care belongs to all of us.

How to get a buff!

Find VPL throughout the Games and share a reflection with us:

  • How do you share care in your community?

  • What does respect look like when we gather?

  • Who taught you what care looks like?

More to come!

Stay tuned!
